Send an Effective Advocate for Change
to Work for Us in Olympia

John Burbank has a proven track record of solving problems - by building coalitions and creating innovative solutions that are practical and do-able.

In Olympia, John will work to enhance the quality of life for the families of our state:
• ensuring quality health coverage,
• improving our public schools,
• securing a clean and healthy environment ,
• helping small businesses in our state thrive, and
• sustaining hope for the future.

John’s Background

John has lived in the same house in the Greenwood/Phinney area of the 36th District for the past 23 years. His wife is Pam MacEwan, an Executive Vice President at Group Health. His daughter Megan is in college and his son is a senior at Ballard. Both his kids went straight through the Seattle public schools, and have done well, thanks in large part to their great teachers in those schools.

A little more than ten years ago, John founded the Economic Opportunity Institute (EOI). EOI helps to problem-solve the fundamental issues of middle class life, such as health coverage, education, retirement security, and early childhood education.

Examples of John’s leadership on these issues includes:

• writing the successful basic health plan initiative in 2001, which gave health coverage to thousands of working families.
• developing the policy for the minimum wage initiative, the first in America to have an automatic annual cost-of-living adjustment to keep up with inflation.
• the plan for universal retirement savings coverage, which the state is now developing.
increased pay for child care teachers with the early childhood education career and wage ladder.
• pushing paid family leave through the Legislature.

Before founding EOI, John worked for the Fremont Public Association, helping to transfer Sand Point Naval Base to the city and establish housing for the homeless there. He earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Washington. He was also the political director of the State Labor Council, co-chaired the Central America Peace Campaign, and worked for the Senate Democratic Caucus in Olympia.

He’s been a longtime active member of the Washington Conservation Voters and Washington Wilderness Coalition. He chaired the 32nd District Democrats, when the district included Ballard and Phinney and Greenwood. And he coached his son’s soccer team for several years.

A Proven Track Record to Solving Problems
“We have the opportunity now to focus on the real challenges of the 21st century: quality health coverage, our environment, our quality of life, our kids’ education, before they become unmanageable.“ - John Burbank

Let’s send John to Olympia to put his coalition-building skills and innovative policy making to work for all of us. But John can’t get to Olympia without your help and support. This is a group effort. It is not about John Burbank. It is about our society, our children, and our future. In whatever way you can, help us put John on the road to the Legislature.
